Our History

Scottsville Volunteer Rescue Squad was established in 1974 by the Thacker Brothers, Raymond and Homer.

The organization’s first squad house was located in  the building that previously housed Minor’s Diner in downtown Scottsville; the ambulance garage was located in the Victory Theatre building (pictured at right).   However, in response to an expanding membership and need for additional space, in 1999, SVRS acquired a piece of property on Route 6 (Irish Road) just west of Scottsville. Here, a new squad house was constructed (construction photos below); the new building was built to accommodate a community/training room, a kitchen, several crew sleeping rooms, storage, office space, and a large  bay area to house ambulances.

As SVRS began to grow, the organization formed a Water Rescue Team, a well-suited addition, since Scottsville sits on the banks of the James River.

Today, SVRS has grown into a  60-member organization with state-of-the-art rescue and extrication equipment to serve the Scottsville area.
