Extrication/Heavy Squad Operations

Water Rescue Team

SVRS is home to Squad 709, a heavy squad/extrication vehicle. This squad truck is dispatched to the scene of motor vehicle accidents as it contains equipment necessary to perform vehicle stabilization and patient extrication. 709 is often also on the scene of active structure fires as it contains a cascade system capable of refilling firefighter SCBAs (self-contained breath apparatus) on-scene, which enhances the capabilities of our partner volunteer fire department.

SVRS members obtain special credentials and receive extensive training in order to be able to operate 709 and respond to scenes with possible patient entrapment.  VEHEXT (Vehicle Extrication) classes are held yearly within Albemarle County.

Because Scottsville is situated on the banks of the James River, our Water Rescue team is an integral part of the emergency rescue services SVRS provides to the community.  Members of our Water Rescue team may be trained in any of the following areas:

· Introduction to Swift Water Rescue (Shore Support)

· Swift Water Rescue

· Open Water Diving

· Rescue Diving

· Boat Operations

Our Water Rescue team is generously supported by the proceeds from the James River Runners Chili Cook-Off, held each May at Hatton Ferry.

The Water Rescue Team often provides standby services at area events involving water sports, such as triathlons.

Water Rescue 704 and the new boat are available (two top photos) to assist on water rescue calls.

SVRS members Brandis Roman, Scott Roman, and Erica Storey (right) all became certified in Swift Water Rescue through a 4-day course at VAVRS Rescue College in June 2008.
